Seal Beach Volleyball Club Coaching Staff for the 2011-2012 Season
We have worked very hard over the past 20 years to assemble one of the finest club volleyball coaching staffs in Southern California. Our experienced staff is committed to provide excellent teaching of volleyball fundamentals at every level. The qualifications of our coaches are very extensive as our average coach has been active in competitive volleyball, either as a player and/or coach, for over 15 years. We are equally proud of the fact that our coaches are also good mentors and role models who have plenty of practical experience outside of volleyball.
Here is our coaching staff for the 2011-2012 Club Season:
- Director of the Youth Volleyball Program for the Recreational Dept of the City of Seal Beach
- Coached for Seal Beach VBC for the last 15 yrs qualifying 5 teams to the US Junior Nationals including a Bronze Medal (GU12 in 2002)
- Competitive player for 32 years; CIF Finals for Bishop Montgomery HS; 4 years of NCAA at Chapman College; and with Athletes in Action and International Ambassadors for Christ

- Coach Girls JV at Bishop Montgomery HS
- Head Coach Boys Varsity at Mayfair HS
- Former Men's Head Coach NCAA Div 1 Quincy University
- Coached Club for 30 years at all levels including 14 years at Seal Beach VBC, former USAV Camp Coach & Clinician for Junior Olympic Development Camps.
- Coached Middle School, High School and Junior College levels including 5 years as Boys & Girls Varsity Coach @ Fountain Valley HS winning 4 Sunset League Championships
- Competitive player in high school, college, US Open, Sr. Olympics, & Sr. World Games.
- Competitive player for the past 37 years in high school, college, and national levels
- Coached 5 years at the club level including 3 years at Seal Beach VBC. l
- Has also coached 1 year at the High School level
- Competitive player for the past 17 years including 8 years playing for Seal Beach VBC
- Coached Seal Beach VBC for 6 years, Coached high school volleyball & water polo.
- Played NCAA Division I volleyball and water polo at UC Irvine and was awarded Big West Conference scholar-athlete honors at UCI
Marcelo Guanes (15’s Coach, email: marcelo@sealbeachvolleyballclub.com)
- Coached at all levels for 20 years; 2 years as an assistant coach for the Argentina National Team
- Coached 10 years for St. Margaret’s High School; Former Girls’ Varsity coach at Cypress HS
- Coached Seal Beach VBC for past 3 years
- Coached Seal Beach VBC teams that won Gold (GU12 in 2008) and Bronze (GU13 in 2011) Medals at the US Junior Nationals
- Assistant coach on Ichiban VBC team that won the US Junior Olympics Gold Medal in GU18 Open Div (1999)
- Coached Seal Beach VBC team to the Championship Finals at the Davis Volleyball Festival (1996)
- Competitive player for 15 years including club, beach, and Division 1 NCAA; full volleyball scholarship to Fordham University, MVP, scholar-athlete award, all-conference team
- Formerly competed in beach volleyball at semi-pro level (AAA-rated player in CBVA)
- Coached Seal Beach VBC for the past 4 years
- Competitive player for the last 16 years including club, beach, and Division 1 NCAA
- Currently competes in beach volleyball at semi-pro level (AAA-rated player in CBVA)
- Coached Seal Beach VBC for the past 3 years; coached at numerous clinics; Boys High School Head Varsity Coach
- Coached at all levels; CYO, High School, Club (12s-18s), Collegiate, USA Junior National Team
- Former Director and Head Coach of Ichiban Volleyball Club of Long Beach, CA
- Won 5 Gold, 6 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals at the US Junior Olympics in Open Divisions
- Competitive player for the past 13 years; Marina High School for 4 years - CIF Championship 2004
- Played for Cal Jrs. VBC 4 years, and Golden West VBC 1 year
- Coached Seal Beach VBC for the past 4 years

- Played four years at NCAA Division 1 for Fresno State University
- Captain at the High School and College level
- Coached 2 years at the club level
Maegan Zabukovec (Backup / Sub Coach, email: maegan@sealbeachvolleyballclub.com)
- Competitive player and coach for the past 17 years. 5th season with SBVBC.
- Played at Cal State LA, 2 time Conference Champions, 4 years with NCAA Playoff appearances
- NCCA All-American, Female Athlete of the Year at CSULA in 2003 & 2004
Bob O’Brien (Backup / Sub Coach)
- Founder, past director, and coach of Seal Beach Volleyball Club, and has coached 9 SCVA Div 1 teams
- Coached 5 Seal Beach VBC teams to the Junior Olympics, and 6 teams to the top 8 at the Volleyball Festival
- Competitive player 39 yrs, played on champion teams Sr US Open, World Senior Games, World Masters Games
Dave Burgener (Back-up / Sub Coach)
- Competitive player for the last 29 years
- Coached 12 years for Seal Beach Volleyball Club in 12’s, 13’s, and 14’s
- Very strong organizational skills (business experience in personnel, marketing, operations, and management)
Nancy Cherin (Back-up / Sub Coach)
- 3-time All-American at University of Illinois, and was Big 10 MVP
- Played on gold medal team at US Open, and was named MVP
- Played professionally in Europe and on WPVA pro beach tour
Dennis Creighton (Back-up / Sub coach)
- Competitive player for the last 39 years
- Coached girls, boys, high school, club, and college for 30 years
- Former member of the CIF Southern Section volleyball advisory committee (7 years)
