Announcements:
Our
yearbooks will be handed out at our annual beach tournament and awards day on Saturday, June
14.
All teams in
our club will play in the season-ending 2-day SCVA Regionals (May 24-25 for 12’s, 13’s, and 14’s
teams; May 31 and June 1 for 15’s; and June 7-8 for 16’s). Note that this tournament for 12’s, 13’s,
and 14’s is on MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, so please plan ahead. This is the SCVA season finale for all
players not going to a post-season tournament (Reno Volleyball Festival or the
Junior Olympics), so it will be very important for all players to be there for
both days of this big event. Saturday’s
schedule will be pool play (could be either 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. OR 3 p.m. to 9
p.m.). On Sunday all teams will have
pool play in the morning followed by playoffs for ALL TEAMS which will be in
the afternoon/evening. We will need to
have our team rosters at full strength for this very big event, so please clear
your schedules so you can be there.
SCVA
Regionals will also be the end of
the practice season for
players not going to a post-season tournament (Reno Volleyball Festival or the
Junior Olympics. We do want those
players to attend our annual beach tournament and awards day on Saturday, June
14, of course. Players who are
attending a post-season tournament will continue to have team practices through
the end of June.
All players
in our club must be up to date at this point on all of their club dues payments ($380 up front, and $300 on December 1,
January 1, February 1, and March 1).
Players who play on teams practicing 3 times per week (12-Tony, 15-Tony,
and 16-Erika) owed an additional $300 payment on April 1. If you missed any of those deadlines, the
easiest way to take care of this is to mail a check right away to the address
at the top of this web. Keep the
coaches out of the payment collection business if at all possible. Simply send your dues checks (made out to
“SBVBC”) on time to the address at the top of this web page. If you want to pay by cash or credit card,
call club director Bob OBrien at 562-430-6671.
The tournament schedule for the whole season is posted at http://scvavolleyball.org/girls_schedule.htm for girls teams, and at http://scvavolleyball.org/boys_schedule.htm for boys teams.
Team practices this week:
We have a very unusual practice schedule this week due to Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11. We know that all of our players will be at home that day, loving their mothers, so most teams will cancel their Sunday practices this week. In addition, we have 10 teams who all have tournaments on Saturday morning, so that compresses our practice schedule for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Here is this week’s schedule.

Golden West College, and on Thursday, May 8, from 7 to 9 at Good Shepherd.

DIRECTIONS
TO OUR PRIMARY PRACTICE SITES:
In our club we use 2 primary practice
sites:
McGaugh School (MG) is at 600
Seal Beach Boulevard in Seal Beach, on the corner of Seal Beach Blvd. and Bolsa
Avenue. The school is on Seal Beach
Blvd., about 2 miles south of the 405 Freeway, or about 2 blocks inland (north)
from Pacific Coast Highway.
Good Shepherd Church (GS) is at
11600 Los Alamitos Boulevard in Los Alamitos, which is about a mile and a half
north of the 405 Freeway, or about a half mile south of Katella Avenue. Note that the exit on the 405 Freeway is
Seal Beach Boulevard, which becomes Los Alamitos Blvd. just north of the
freeway.
In addition, some teams could
occasionally schedule some practices at our three alternate sites:
Fountain Valley Recreation Center is located on the west edge of Mile
Square Park in Fountain Valley. The address of the recreation center is
16400 Brookhurst Street, which is on the corner of Brookhurst St. and Heil
Avenue. To get there, take the 405 Freeway south (7 minutes south of the
Seal Beach Blvd. exit), exit on Warner Avenue EAST, go east one half mile to
Brookhurst, turn left (north) and go one half mile to the intersection of
Brookhurst and Heil. There is a signal intersection at that corner with a
very large street sign over the intersection that says "Fountain Valley
Recreation Center".
Huntington Beach Pier (for occasional beach practices) is located at the
intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street in Huntington Beach. From the 405 Freeway, take the Beach
Boulevard South exit (toward the ocean).
Go all the way to the end at Pacific Coast Highway, then turn right
(north) and proceed one half mile to the pier.
There are convenient parking lots on both sides of the pier right next
to the sand (about $12 per day), or you can park for free by going two blocks
north of the pier and parking on the street in the residential
neighborhood. Volleyball courts are
usually set up right next to the pier, on both sides. Courts cannot be reserved, so we will use what is available. Look for your team on both sides.
Golden West
College sand courts (for
occasional sand court practices) are located on Goldenwest St., about 1 mile
south of the 405 Freeway. The sand
courts are located in the northwest section of the campus, next to the tennis
courts, which are visible from Goldenwest St.
Be sure check the parking signs in the parking lot, as they DO give
tickets as posted.
ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING
TRYOUTS FOR GIRLS’ TEAMS AND BOYS’ TEAMS:
16TH ANNUAL TRYOUTS FOR OUR GIRLS’ TEAMS:
Tryouts for
girls age 14 and under (players who will not turn 15 before 9-1-08) began in
the first week of October. Tryouts for
girls age 15 and over (players who will be 15 or older on 9-1-08) began when
the CIF Southern Section playoffs for high school volleyball ended (November
18). We are still filling a few scattered
openings on our team rosters. The
following paragraphs contain the basic information about our tryouts. The bottom portion of this web page contains
a lot more detail about our club (philosophy, fees, playing time policy,
etc.). If you would be interested in
scheduling a make-up tryout appointment, contact club director Bob OBrien by
email to info@SealBeachVolleyballClub.com or by phone at 562-430-6671.
In your email please let us know the player’s name, gender, birthdate,
school, and grade, and a bit of very brief information about your volleyball experience.
This year we
will have 15 separate teams for girls in our club (three teams in 16’s, two in
15’s, five in 14’s, two in 13’s, and three in 12’s). A player’s “volleyball age” is determined by her age on September
1, 2008. Players in each age division
are grouped together by skill level, so when we have multiple teams in an age
division, we are able to offer a separate team at each skill level (elite,
advanced, intermediate, or developmental).
In that way every player in our club will get significant playing time
in the tournaments to gain the skills necessary to move up to the next skill
level. All teams are capped at only 10
players per team for playing time purposes.
6TH ANNUAL TRYOUTS
FOR OUR BOYS’ TEAMS:
This year our club will have one team for boys in the 14&U age
division, and one team for boys in the 15&U age division. A player’s “volleyball age” is determined by
his age on 9-1-08. Tryouts for boys
were held in September. A few roster
positions on our 15’s team are still available. Further tryouts are available by special arrangement. If you would be interested in scheduling a
make-up tryout, contact club director Bob OBrien by email to info@SealBeachVolleyballClub.com or by phone at
562-430-6671.
GENERAL
INFORMATION ABOUT SEAL BEACH VOLLEYBALL CLUB:
If you will be attending any tryout in any age division, it will be
helpful to give us a bit of advance information so we can plan for the number
and experience level of the players who will be there. Please send an email to info@SealBeachVolleyballClub.com and let us
know the player’s name, gender, birthdate, school, and grade, and a bit of very brief information about your volleyball
experience. In the case of potential
players who do not have much volleyball experience yet but have good
competitive experience in other team sports, let us know that as well.
Club fees: $1495 for the season (includes all practices and all
regular-season tournaments up through the Southern California Regional Championships
in June, 2008). Player pays $380
initially to join the club, then $1115 on December 1 (or else they can go on
the “payment plan” and pay $300 on December 1, January 1, February 1, and March
1). Also, each player rounds up $250 of
sponsor ads for the club’s annual yearbook (or the player can just pay an extra
$250). Player earns a 50% commission on
the surplus if their ads total over $250, which is our club’s only fundraiser
(and a very good one). Uniform packages
are chosen by each team. The three
uniform jerseys are $110, and other uniform items are available as well.
Most teams practice twice a week for 2
hours. Elite teams practice 3 times a
week and pay $300 extra for the season.
Most of our club’s families prefer to
avoid practice on school nights as much as possible, in order to preserve the
appropriate balance between athletic, academic, and family priorities. But we recognize that every family’s
schedule and priorities are different.
So our club has available gym time scattered throughout the week for
team practices, as every team has different schedule complications due to the
other outside activities of the players.
When we begin the actual practice season, each player gives us a “conflict
calendar” of their outside activities, and we compile those in order to
optimize each team’s practice schedule.
Players are allowed to play another
sport in the same season as our club volleyball team, as long as schedule
conflicts are split at least 50/50.
We recognize that many families have
religious activities on Sunday mornings, so we avoid Sunday morning practices
for those teams. We do require that
players make other worship arrangements so they can play with their team in
tournaments if their team is scheduled to play on Sunday. Players who will never be available at ANY
time of the day on ANY Sundays due to major schedule conflicts should not play
club volleyball, as some of the major tournament events will definitely be held
on Sundays, and occasional practices for some teams could be held in the
afternoon or evening on Sunday as well.
All players will be strongly encouraged
to attend one of the huge post-season travel tournaments with their team in
late June or early July. Families need
to plan well in advance for the extra expense of those tournaments.
All teams are capped at only 10 players per team for playing time
purposes so every player in our club will get significant playing time in the
tournaments to gain the skills necessary to move up to the next skill level. We do have a formal playing time policy in
our club to ensure that players who work hard at practice WILL get to play in
the tournaments.
If you need more information, feel free to contact club director
Bob OBrien via e-mail at info@SealBeachVolleyballClub.com or call
our club’s office at 562-430-6671.
Best regards,
Bob OBrien
